Springbok

The springbok is a medium-sized antelope found in southern and southwestern Africa. The sole member of the genus Antidorcas, the springbok is classified as a member of the family Bovidae. It was first described by the German zoologist Eberhard August Wilhelm von Zimmermann in 1780. The springbok is a slender and graceful antelope. Adults stand approximately 85 cm (33 in) at the shoulder and weigh between 27 and 42 kg (60 and 93 lb). Both sexes have a light brown coat, which is short and glossy in summer, but longer and duller in winter. The hair on the back of the neck and on the buttocks is erect and forms a crest. There is a white ring around the eyes and a white band running from the corners of the mouth to the base of each ear. The tail is white with a black tuft at the tip. The springbok is a fast and agile animal. It can reach speeds of up to 80 km/h (50 mph) and can jump up to 3 m (9.8 ft) in the air. It is a good swimmer and can cross rivers with ease.
